ZWAANSWYK ROAD GOES HI-TECH IN THEIR FIGHT AGAINST BABOONS

The members of the Zwaanswyk Association of Property Owners (ZAPO) in Zwaanswyk Road, Tokai, have been experiencing problems with marauding baboons for many years now. After consultation with all of the relevant authorities, ZAPO erected an electrified fence along the forest perimeter, with gates placed at regular intervals, allowing horse riders and walkers access the forest.

“Faced with the problem of requiring monitoring of the gates opening and closing, fence alarms, power outages and the related dispatching of technicians and baboon monitors, the trustees approached us at Verifier for a solution,” says Mike Voortman, Director of Verifier, security monitoring company. “We installed a CCTV integrated solution linked to our monitoring centre via a wireless network. All fence triggers and alarms are now all relayed to us for verification and appropriate action is then taken after visual confirmation.”

This monitoring has allowed for a peaceful co-existence between the residents and the baboons. A spin off of the monitored cameras along the fence is that it has also acted as a major deterrent to criminals. On Verifiers recommendation, the residents are now considering implementing the Visec LPR (License Plate Recognition) solution at their single road access point, thereby taking the next step in crime prevention for their area.
