How to set Security Resolutions for 2025 you'll actually stick with!

Don’t let your security resolutions be like a Gym membership, a promise to yourselves to improve, followed by impulse spending on possibly the wrong thing, resulting in you giving up before you see the returns!

Here are a few tips to make real security resolutions you can actually stick to!

“I want to invest in my security this year”.

Choose what you want to spend money on. Start with your biggest priority, and work your way backwards. A non-security spend, like a can of Q20 to grease up your gate motor, can dramatically boost your security by preventing an issue, and that won’t break the bank!

Investing in the right technology for the right job can boost your security in unforeseen ways! We have written up a case study previously where a client had multiple malls which were getting targeted by criminals. By investing in License Plate Recognition at all of their malls, it effectively knitted their security together, boosting their security way more than if they just added more cameras at each individual site.

Our tips: Choose the right technology for the right reasons. Maintenance is also as important as investing in new technology or security infrastructure. If your security can’t get better just yet due to a limited budget, make sure it isn’t getting worse!

“I want to take the time to know my system better”

This resolution is especially important for large property owners or facilities managers. Busy people often have the finances to improve on security, but lack the time to personally address it. This can create a catch-22 situation. If you don’t take the time to understand your security systems, you may not see issues that end up actually costing you time down the road, either to fix a problem, or to prevent a recurring issue!

And on the flip side, setting aside a small amount of time per week, month, or at the minimum every 6 months, can have a positive effect, freeing up more time in the future! It’s a good idea to assess your security broadly at first, but it’s recommended to book a timeslot with us to do an in-depth site check once every 6 months.

Our tips: Don’t think of it as “taking the time”, think of it as “giving the time”. It’s a gift to “future-you”, so start small, set a calendar reminder, and if you need a list of things to focus on, we’re more than happy to help!

“My security or operations issues are draining me, I want to fix that!”

Without monitoring, you can’t manage, and without management, you can’t maintain. There will be an energy cost to boosting your security and operations, that’s unavoidable, but if you do the same thing every year and expect different results, that won’t help. Security is about sustained little checks over the year, not about a ‘shot in the dark’ approach of going in too strong and unsustainably chasing your tail.

So look at what you did previously, assess what works, and what gave you issues. Often 10% of things will take up 90% of your time, so if you can identify those issues, you’re on your way! And write things down! Free up your mental bandwidth, brainstorm problems and solutions, and don’t stress the small stuff. It’s more important to start thinking about possible solutions and identify problems, than to have a ‘perfect’ plan of action.

Our tips: Ask for help when you need it. If you’ve identified your “10%” problems, but don’t know where to go from there, speak to the experts in Managed Security and Facilities Operations!

Final Thoughts:

Small actions can make a big difference. Don’t be afraid to call for help when you need it. And give yourself the gift of investing in your future security and operations. The fact that you’re reading this is already a great start. Just being interested and engaged can kick-start your 2025 security and operations goals!
